Sallatunturi Speed Skiing track is placed in the slope Arskan rinne. It resides in the Salla Ski Resort in Finland, just at the arctic circle.
The track is one of the technical tracks on the FIS Speed Skiing tour, rewarding skiers who have have a really stable position and super flat skis.
The Salla race track starts with a medium steep section, turning very steep in the middle, and then medium steep again. The changes in the terrain causes the skier to both lift and compress, making it easy to make mistakes.
The timing zone is a place where much of the race is decided, as the skier is compressed just as the timing zone starts. It is very important to hold the skis flat through the terrain changes, not to catch an edge or loose speed.
At the top there is normally a starting ramp built in snow for the race, making for higher speeds.
The track is unusually easy to access with parking possibilities just next to the breaking area. There is also a house with facilities and timing info display just next to the track.
Speeds in Sallatunturi is somewhere in between 140 and 170 km/h, depending on the snow and wind conditions.
