Headwalls is hosting the only World Cup Speed Skiing event in North America. The World Cup and the Velocity Challenge races here is one of the longest running Speed Skiing events in the world.
The Headwalls Speed Track is one of the most technically difficult tracks on the FIS Speed Ski World Cup tour. It is a track that turns gradually steeper on the way down to the compression. There are two distinct lips, where especially the second is known to throw racers off balance. Sometimes even air time occurs.
The speeds are up to 178 km/h for the premier Speed 1 class.
Racers coming here all talk about the atmosphere. Canada is a friendly place, and Sun Peaks is a great party!
Speed skiing first came to the Kamloops area in the mid 1980’s. At this time a group of local racing enthusiasts, some of which were speed skiing professionally, decided to hold a speed event at the resort formerly known as Tod Mountain. With the guidance of these seasoned racers and the support of the ski area, the local racers made a vision become a reality.
Over the last 26 years this group successfully hosted Canadian and Provincial Championships, Velocity Challenge Pro races and 12 FIS Speed Ski World Cup events. The current course record of 178.22 km/h was set at the 2014 Velocity Challenge by Sun Peaks local-Kenny Dale.
Sun Peaks Resort is the 2nd largest ski resort in Canada. At the helm of this massive development is the Nippon Cable Company of Japan, a leader in the ski industry. Sun Peaks Resort has embarked on an aggressive development plan to transform a day skier area into a four season world class destination resort. As improvements are happening daily, the rave reviews of Sun Peaks continue to build.
